IAMAMIWHOAMI

June 16, 2010

It’s difficult to know where to begin with a such a labyrinthine concept; I guess from the beginning, where most reasonable things start. Four months ago a video appeared on youtube, its title was “Prelude 699130082.451322-5.4.21.3.1.20.9.15.14.1.12” and featured what at first looks like some decently arty saturated shots of trees with some nice ambient electronic music playing over the top. And that, old friend, is where normality ends.

On closer inspection the trees seem to be sprouting arms, waving in the wind and dirty. Dirty from what? One can only speculate; options include playing rugby, general garden work, using your limbs as a kind of paintbrush (an inefficient way to cover any canvas), or maybe even just a bit of good old fashion soil punching. Regardless, the mere 0:56 second clip delves onwards, clipping in shots of even dirtier bodies writhing in a (more or less) completely non-sexy way.

The videos were posted on youtube under the name of iamamiwhoami and reportedly sent to several bloggers and journalists.

To date there have been 11 videos posted on the iamamiwhoami’s youtube channel (the newest one last week), all equally cryptic with many featuring the same female lead. But who the heck pants is she? There are obvious comparisons to be made with Fever Ray – the unnerving atmosphere of videos coupled with the electronic music – however it seems like a rather easy end to the mystery and would equate to a rather pointless endeavour for Karin Dreijer Anderson. Other speculation has put a rather incongruous list of people in the frame; from Madonna to Goldfrapp via Lady Gaga.

Personally, I reckon it’s Kerry Katona. Think about it. Kerry rhymes with berry, berries grow on trees, trees are in the video, videos of cats, Kerry CATona, does she own a cat? Possibly. It’s all coming together. Touché Katona, touché.

Whoever it is, I have been thoroughly enjoying iamamiwhoami’s music, and here below are the second and third instalments in the series. To see all 11 vidoes, visit iamamiwhoami’s youtube channel HERE You can also now buy iamamiwhoami’s music on iTunes.
